Be Prepared

Here is a list of some of the most commonly asked questions in a typical interview. Take a few moments to run through them and consider how you would answer them. If you have at least thought about them in advance then when the time comes you won’t be caught out by an unexpected question  

Academic Experience Questions

  1. What school/college/university subjects did you like best/least and Why?
  2. Do you think that your exam results are a good indication of your academic achievement?
  3. What have you learned from participating in extracurricular activities?
  4. Did you undertake any ‘Work Experience Placements’? What were they and did you learn?  

Questions About You

  1. What made you choose this career/job?
  2. What do you consider to be your strengths and weaknesses?
  3. Tell me about yourself.
  4. What motivates you?
  5. How do you determine or evaluate success?
  6. What two or three achievements have given you the most satisfaction and Why?
  7. If you were hiring someone for this position, what qualities would you look for?
  8. In what kind of work environment are you most comfortable?
  9. How do you work under pressure?
  10. What is most important to you in a job?
  11. Will you relocate?
  12. Are you willing to travel?
  13. What major problem have you encountered, and how did you deal with it?
  14. What else do you think I should know about you?  

Questions About Your Experience

  1. Why should I employ you?
  2. What qualities do you have that make you think that you will be successful?  

Question About Your Personal Goals

  1. What do you see yourself doing five years from now?
  2. What do you really want to do in life?
  3. What are the most important rewards you expect in your career?
  4. Why do you want to work here?
  5. What are your long-range and short-range goals?  

Questions to Determine What You Know About the Position/Industry/Company

  1. What do you know about our company?
  2. What do you think it takes to be successful in this company?
  3. In what ways do you think that you could make a contribution to the company?  

Questions You May Ask
You should always have a few questions prepared to ask an interviewer, as this helps to demonstrate your interest in the job and the company itself. Be sure to ask questions that focus on the job, its responsibilities and opportunities. Questions about salary, pension, holidays and other benefits, etc. are better left until after you have received an offer.

  1. What are the day-to-day responsibilities of the position?
  2. Do you have a formal training programme? If yes, could you describe it?
  3. How will my performance be evaluated, and how often?
  4. What is a typical career path for an employee entering the company?
  5. What are the companies plans for expansion?
  6. What makes this company different from its competitors?
  7. What are the major challenges facing your industry today?
